HPV stands for the human papillomavirus, which includes those strains of papillomavirus that affects humans. The human papillomavirus causes warts on the skin but is also implicated in several cancers, including cervical cancer.

Many strains of HPV cause no symptoms and most infections pass without treatment within 1 or 2 years. It is the strains that have been implicated in serious cancers that cause the most concern.
